Some of you may know !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! leading up to the new !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! at my sister and brother-in-law's house.

Well, today I drove it.
I didn't drive it far, but only about 100 yards or so moving cars around during our Thanksgiving festivities.
Two dash lights are already on.
It's fairly clean, and decent (I guess) for a car with that many miles. In the short time I looked at the thing, I saw it needed hatch struts and the roof cubby box, and the factory first aid kit. I might see if I can source some of them for Xmas.

Its idling a little high too

In the cold, mine will idle up to 2000. Some Japanese vehicles seem to idle a bit higher.

Well then, that explains why My ranger is idling at 600. Its freezing here
![]() 11/27/2014 at 22:16 |
|
That is a bit low. Usually the colder it is, the higher the rpm.
![]() 11/27/2014 at 22:19 |

Higher cold idle. It had only been running for a minute or two.
Completely normal.
![]() 11/27/2014 at 22:21 |

I just googled, 600 is actually pretty normal. A little low but Im not too worried. The normal range is about 7-800, 600 is within the margin of error. The tach could just be inaccurate

Oil level Or temp gauge? I have a d40 navara(frontier in US?) The instrument cluster is very similar to this but more third worldy and lacks some things :(

Engines need more fuel to run properly when cold, and in turn it also must run higher RPM to compensate for the extra fuel. So, this is a cold start-up program and its based upon air-fuel ratio, coolant temperature and air temp/flow/pressure measurements being read at the time.

You'd think he'd be embarrassed or try to hide his negligence from you by now.

Pressure, and I didn't even notice that it had one. How odd. That's usually one you don't get.

Of course! Pressure, now I'm a real life face palm gif! I like that cluster and am sad I don't have it in my ute.

whoops, wrong user. Meant to comment to jordanwphillips, sorry

I just let her idle for about 2 minutes. Its 45 degrees out, once the tach leveled out she was at 700 with no AC or heat running. The Engine is fine (thank god), but the trans definitely needs some love. Im pretty sure the clutch is fine as well

Driving it lets it warm up faster and doesn't waste gas.

He had an issue the other day that actually made me proud.
Car wouldn't start, and he started Googling it, and found a thread on a message board and wanted me to read it.
I'll be damned. He saw little plastic pieces on the driver's floorboard, and threw that in the search, too.
It was a plastic switch stop that broke off, and the clutch starter switch was not being pressed in all the way. He figured out how to start the car by holding down the switch with his finger.
He went back to the dealer where he bought it to pick up his plates, and told them to get one and put it on.

Not bad.

All cars should have that little gauge. I find it most useful.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 22:09 |

AGREED! There are two things your engine will never recover from - Water temp and oil pressure. I want to see them.

My mom's car doesn't even have a TEMPERATURE GAUGE. Seriously. I looked all over the bloody dash and couldn't believe my eyes when I couldn't find it. I suppose if you mess around with the digital instrument cluster there has to be some hidden setting to display it, but this kind of thing should ALWAYS be in a highly visible part of the dashboard, preferably with a flashing red light and a loud buzzer whenever it started to exceed normal operating temperatures.
Then there are all newer Volvos in which there is no oil dipstick. The oil level is only shown electronically in the gauge... What the eff?
I love those old Mercedes and red-block Volvos where you got gauges for EVERYTHING, from oil temperature and battery voltage to turbo pressure. You could instantly tell if there was some issue with the car by just looking at the dashboard! No wonder those things did half-a-million miles easily. Nowadays you can't even see essential stuff like coolant temperature and oil level... I suppose manufacturers deliberately try to eliminate all awareness and self-preservation from owners so they blow up their engines quicker and go buy a new one. Sad...
